the civil rights movement The Social Gospel Movement of the late 19th century sought to improve living conditions, end poverty and promote justice through a mix of progressive reforms. This movement heavily influenced the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s by providing the theological and intellectual foundations for the push for racial justice and equality. Key leaders of the Civil Rights Movement such as Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin and Andrew Young were all inspired by the Social Gospel Movement and its ideals.
